In The Island of Dr. Moreau, which is based on a novella by H.G. Wells, Braddock (Michael York) is a decent young Englishman who has unaccountably been saved from being thrown overboard from a ship sailing in a remote area of the pacific by the mysterious Dr. Montgomery (Nigel Davenport). Dr. Montgomery is accompanying a cargo of animals destined for a tropical island. At first an "honored guest" (prisoner) on that island, he finds his contacts with the natives increasingly disturbing, for they are not like any men he has ever seen. Eventually it transpires that these "men" are experimental reconstructions from wild animals made by a particularly sinister scientist, Dr. Moreau (Burt Lancaster). He feels that he is in danger from the animal/men and from Dr. Moreau himself and does not know where to turn. This story was also filmed in 1933 as The Island of Lost Souls, starring Charles Laughton as the monomaniacal Dr. Moreau and was remade yet again in 1996 with Marlon Brando in the title role. For entertainment purposes only.

In 1898, a small area between Sabie and Crocodile River was designated as a National Wild Animal Reserve, thus making the Kruger National Park Africa's oldest animal sanctuary. It is 450 kilometres long and about 55 kilometres wide and is one of the largest animal parks in the world, with 147 animal species, over 500 bird varieties, and 114 different reptiles. The Kruger Park is divided into three areas. Whilst bush land and mopane trees form the northern half, the wide grass plains of the central region are home to a large number of wild animals. In the lush vegetation of the southern half, that consists mainly of acacia trees and bush land, is the preferred habitat of rhinos, hippos and many other wild animals. The elephant, rhino, African buffalo, lion and leopard make up the so-called 'Big Five' of the Kruger National Park and in spite of its dry climate there is an immense variety of plant life with a rich assortment of trees, bushes, grasses, ferns, climbers and herbaceous plants. Located on the southern bank of the Sabie Rive, the Skukuza Camp is the park's organisational centre and can accommodate over 1000 visitors. In 1902, this location was the base camp for the co-founder of the Kruger National Park, Colonel Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp is situated on the 'Lion Safari Road', one of the five most favoured routes for observing animals in the entire park, and a well maintained road network connects the park's 24 camps with the most interesting sights. On the edge of the park's winding sandy tracks there is often a chance encounter with a prowling hyena and the road itself is popular with rhinos and many other creatures that appear to be determined to be photographed by anxious tourists! The Kruger National Park that was once the Mecca of the Big Game Hunter is now an idyllic paradise of Nature and a veritable Noah's Ark for much of Africa's wildlife.

In the North of Tanzania is one of Africa's finest natural landscapes, the Serengeti. From endless grass covered savannahs to dense rain forests the large variety of landscapes as well as many species of wildlife is really quite remarkable. The Massai have retained their age-old traditions and the pastures at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater are ideal for their herds of cattle. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal.

Nature documentary on the Great White Shark, king of sharks - a living legend. The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, also known as the great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a species of large lamniform shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. The great white shark is mainly known for its size, with the largest individuals known to have approached or exceeded 6 m (20 ft) in length, and 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) in weight. This shark reaches its maturity around 15 years of age and can have a life span of over 30 years. The great white shark is arguably the world's largest known extant macropredatory fish, and is one of the primary predators of marine mammals. It is also known to prey upon a variety of other marine animals, including fish and seabirds. It is the only known surviving species of its genus Carcharodon, and is ranked first in having the most attacks on humans. The IUCN list the great white shark as a vulnerable species, while it is included in Appendix II of CITES. The bestselling novel Jaws by Peter Benchley and the subsequent blockbuster film by Steven Spielberg depicted the great white shark as a "ferocious man eater". In reality, humans are not the preferred prey of the great white shark

2.5 million years ago, a periodic shift in the Earth's orbit, coupled with a tilt in its axis, triggered a sudden change in climate and Europe was plunged into an ice age. The wintry iciness of today's Alps spread across northern Europe as ice sheets extended as far south as London, Amsterdam and Berlin. Conditions were ideal for cold-adapted animals, forerunners of musk oxen and reindeer. Woolly mammoth bones dredged from the bottom of the North Sea are evidence that this was once icy tundra. The warm interglacial periods attracted very different creatures: fossil hippos, rhinos, lions and hyenas have been unearthed in London. This thermal pulsing has occurred around twenty times, the last ice age ending 15,000 years ago. Europe now bears the scars of repeated glaciations. Lake Ladoga, Europe's largest freshwater body, is a product of the last thaw and has its own subspecies of seal as well as osprey, moose and beaver. Ibex are ice-age immigrants from Asia, stranded in the European mountains by the receding glaciers. Even the desert sand of Słowiński in Poland can be traced back to glacial debris washed up by the sea. As the ice retreated, the plants and animals associated with modern Europe began to advance north. Those featured include the capercaillie of the northern forests and migrant birds on Germany's wetlands. Modern humans began to settle the coasts alongside otters and seals, and slowly spread along inland waterways, but made little impression on the deciduous forests of the interior.

Florida is the southernmost state of the USA where, for most of the time, the sun shines truly bright. Miami is a magnificent holiday resort that boasts some of the finest entertainment parks in the world. The home of the rich and super rich and where both flamboyance and kitsch reign supreme. The Metro-Dade Cultural Center is situated Downtown where several Spanish-style buildings surround a large plaza that is decorated with colourful and contemporary works of art. The Florida Keys are a group of thirty one coral islands that extend from Miami on the southern point of Florida, to the Caribbean, the first and largest of which is Key Largo that was made famous by a Hollywood movie of the same name. Bonita Springs with its Everglades Wonder Gardens is situated north west of Miami close to the Gulf Of Mexico and features the animals of the Everglades. This wildlife refuge was created in 1936 and was later enlarged with botanical gardens and further animals from all over the world. On the east coast of the Florida Peninsula, Cape Canaveral juts out into the Atlantic. As far back as 1949 the 'Rocket Trials Zone', as it was then known, was built here, an area that has been further developed and extended to become the world famous Space Station that it is today. Today Fort Lauderdale is a popular residential area located on the south Atlantic coast where its harbour and sandy beaches are situated in front of newly built skyscrapers. The Sunshine State: An appropriate name for one of the most entertaining and yet relaxing places on Earth!

A look at how differently life on Earth has evolved between animals, from the deep ocean to those on land, their environments played a role in their design; and an imaginative look at how similar life could take form under vastly different environments of alien worlds. They soar through the heavens, fly through the oceans and glide along land. But these are not creatures found on a wildlife safari. These are life forms from another planet. Armed with scientific fact and a little imagination, experts come together to take you on an unprecedented journey to the edges of our imagination. Scientists, astrobiologists and astronomers create five lines of extraterrestrial evolution, and explain how creatures on the surface of Earth offer a helping hand to understanding life in The Universe.

3-year-old Liam Hoekstra has a rare genetic condition called myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy, which increases his muscle mass and reduces his body fat. At first glance, Liam Hoekstra appears to be a fairly typical 3-year-old. He doesn't have any obvious physical attributes that set him apart from other tots and he behaves like many children his age. But when Liam picks up two five-pound dumbbells and waves them around like stuffed animals, or does rapid-fire sit-ups, it becomes abundantly clear that he has an extraordinary gift.
